Case Study - Great Chesterford Village Community Centre

Great Chesterford Village Community Centre

The new community centre in Cambridgeshire provides a focal point for sport and leisure activities in this rural community.

Situated on the outskirts of the village and surrounded by sports fields and car parking facilities, the building provides approximately 1000 square metres of open floor space for recreational use.

The use of a combination of convex and concave overlapping roofs is used to maximum effect, giving the building a crisp and dramatic appearance.

The concave curved roof covering on the lower level is extended out over the front of the building to form a canopy which extends along the length of the centre of the main entrance.

The dramatic roof design has been achieved by using factory manufactured curved aluminium sheets on the external surface, with paint coated steel sheets used as an interior liner panel. The combination of these two modern cladding materials has enabled the client to achieve a balance of aesthetics, structural strength and economy.

Additionally, the use of the aluminium as an outer sheet, combined with a simple design has provided the client with a very low maintenance option.

Careful attention to the perimeter detailing enabled the crisp lines of the curved verge to be maintained along the eaves lines, thus hiding the gutter system from view. A low maintenance aluminium sinusoidal sheet used on the underside of the extended roof canopy completes the weather protection to the building.
