Case Study - Ancells Business Park

Ancells Business Park

ASL were responsible for the installation of the roofing and cladding of this building, which occupies a cul-de-sac site in Ancells Business Park, Fleet, Hampshire. The building comprises three floors providing total gross internal office accommodation of approximately 30,000 square feet.

Whilst following the scale and external material use of the other buildings on the site, this building has an identity of its own as a result of its curved roofing and curtain wall cladding features.

The building, designed by architects Hamilton Associates of London, was conceived as a glass and metal box, wrapped in a skin of brickwork, with large, square, floor-to-ceiling windows.

The curved roof overhanging the double height entrance area was achieved utilising the Kalzip Aluminium Standing Seam Roofing System.

This feature, which was supported by a lightweight steel colonnade, along with the dynamic diagonal reception wall, directs the attention of the visitors towards the building entrance.

High-quality, low-maintenance materials such as glass, the aluminium louvers and composite cladding panels, contrasting with light coloured brickwork are used externally to harmonise with the building's setting.

Crisply detailed connections, fabricated from colour coated aluminium cladding, add human scale to a simple form.

Roofing Specification

One of the main features of the building is the curved roof structure.

ASL achieved this by installing the Kalzip Aluminium Standing Seam Roofing System as manufactured by Corus Building Systems of Haydock, Merseyside.

The 46-meter long Kalzip outer sheets were manufactured on site in single sheet lengths utilising the Kalzip mobile site roll-forming equipment. The finished 0.9mm thick aluminium sheets were lifted by crane into position and then allowed to curve naturally to the required radius of the roof.

The warm roof built-up construction was completed by the use of a profiled inner liner sheet, a reinforced vapour check with sealed joints and insulated with 100mm thick rock fibre insulation quilt.

Metal Wall Cladding

Flat metal composite wall panels provide another highly visible feature of this prestigious building. ASL were also responsible for the installation of these feature panels, which extend from a line above the third floor window level to the underside of the curved roof structure.

The composite flat panels, manufactured by European Profiles Ltd, comprised of an 80mm thick Lamella core, bonded between an inner and outer skin of 0.7mm thick steel sheet. The outer face of the panels were finished in a Celestia 'Sirius' paint finish from Corus.

Roofing Perimeter Details

ASL were able to achieve the crisp lines around the perimeter of the roof by the installation of a purpose-made Bullnose fascia system. This system, extending along the verge and eaves line, was manufactured from 3.0mm thick aluminium which was then finished in a powder coating to match the roofing and wall cladding. The system also incorporated a concealed gutter and water drainage system and connected to a Strataboard soffit panel, again manufactured by European Profiles Ltd.
